Litha: The Summer Solstice & The Height of the Sun

Litha Summer Solstice

Litha, the Summer Solstice, marks the longest day of the year — a celebration of light, vitality, abundance and the quiet turning back toward darkness. Around 20–21 June in the UK, we reach the peak of solar power.

The Summer Solstice is the longest day and shortest night of the year. The Sun stands at its highest point in the sky. Light stretches late into the evening. The land is lush, green, and humming.

And yet — quietly — this is also the turning point.

From this moment onward, the days begin to shorten. That paradox is what makes Litha so potent.

The Origins of the Solstice Festival

Solstice celebrations long predate modern Pagan naming. Across Europe, midsummer fires were lit to honour the Sun and protect crops and communities.

At sites like Stonehenge, the sunrise aligns with the Heel Stone, demonstrating how deeply our ancestors tracked and revered this moment.

Bonfires were common across England, Ireland and Scandinavia — lit to strengthen the Sun’s power and bless the land.

In Norse traditions, this season was associated with Baldr, a deity of light, beauty and joy.

Whether you call it Midsummer or Litha, this festival has always honoured the same thing:

Life at its fullest expression.

Themes of Litha

The energy of the Summer Solstice is:

  • Vitality

  • Confidence

  • Expansion

  • Abundance

  • Illumination

  • Celebration

  • Gratitude

If Beltane is passion awakening, Litha is power embodied.

This is a wonderful time to ask: Where am I shining? Where am I being seen? What has grown since spring?

Herbals of the Season (UK Focus)

This is herbal abundance season. Hedgerows are alive.

🌼 St John’s Wort

Traditionally harvested around the Solstice. Associated with protection and solar energy. Historically used to ward off negativity.

🌸 Elderflower

In bloom in June. Light, fragrant and linked to protection and fairy folklore.

🌿 Yarrow

Protective, strengthening and deeply connected to boundary work.

🌼 Calendula

Golden petals reflecting the Sun itself. Supports skin and lymphatic flow.

These are solar plants — bright, protective, circulatory.

Energetically, they support confidence and outward energy. Physically, many aid the

nervous system and immune response.

Crystals for Litha Energy

Crystals that hold solar vibration work beautifully now.

☀️ Sunstone

Joy, vitality, leadership energy.

🔥 Citrine

Abundance and confidence.

🌞 Tiger’s Eye

Grounded courage and forward momentum.

💛 Amber

Ancient solar resin — protective and warming.

Keep them on your altar, wear them during Solstice celebrations, or place them in sunlight to recharge (briefly — not all crystals tolerate prolonged sun exposure).

Simple Ways to Celebrate the Summer Solstice

You don’t need to attend a huge gathering (though sunrise at Stonehenge is powerful if you ever choose to go).

Simple practices are enough:

  • Wake early and watch the sunrise.

  • Make a solar herbal infusion (elderflower and mint is beautiful).

  • Light a candle at noon to honour peak light.

  • Create a gratitude list for what has flourished in your life.

  • Cleanse and refresh your home with a citrus-based spray.

This is a time for celebration, not striving.

Litha & The Nervous System

Longer daylight increases serotonin production and influences sleep cycles. Many people feel energised, though some can feel overstimulated.

Balance the fire with:

  • Adequate hydration

  • Mineral-rich foods

  • Time in nature rather than constant social stimulation

  • Evening wind-down rituals to support sleep

Litha is not about burnout. It is about conscious vitality.

The Turning Within the Peak

What I love about the Solstice is its reminder that nothing is static.

At the very height of light, the Wheel quietly begins its descent toward autumn. This isn’t something to fear — it’s a lesson in impermanence.
