Beltane, celebrated on 1st May, marks the turning point into summer — a fire festival of fertility, vitality, passion and protection.
As the Wheel turns from the balance of the Spring Equinox, we arrive at Beltane — the great ignition point of the year.
Observed traditionally on the eve of 1st May, Beltane sits exactly opposite Samhain on the Wheel. Where Samhain honours the thinning veil and descent into darkness, Beltane celebrates life at its fullest expression.
This is the moment when the land is no longer awakening — it is alive.
The Origins of Beltane
Beltane comes from the Gaelic Bealtaine, meaning “bright fire”. It was widely celebrated across Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man.
Historically, communities lit twin bonfires and drove cattle between them for purification and protection before moving livestock to summer pastures. Fire wasn’t symbolic — it was practical magic.
The festival is often linked to the Celtic god Belenus, associated with light and healing, though historical links are debated. What is clear is that Beltane has always been about:
Fertility of land
Fertility of body
Protection of home
Sacred union
Vitality and abundance
In my view, Beltane is one of the most embodied points of the Wheel. It’s not abstract. It’s sensual. It’s physical. It’s rooted in the body and the soil.
Themes of Beltane
Beltane carries the energy of:
Passion
Creativity
Confidence
Sexuality
Expansion
Protection
Sacred union
If Ostara is the seed, Beltane is the blossom.
It’s the time to ask:
Where am I ready to be seen?
Where am I ready to take up space?
What wants to bloom?
Herbals of the Season (UK Focus)
In hedgerows and woodland edges, life is surging.
🌿 Hawthorn
Often called the May Tree. Blossoming around Beltane and deeply associated with fairy folklore. Traditionally linked to the heart — physically and energetically.
🌼 Meadowsweet
Sweet, uplifting, slightly intoxicating scent. Associated with joy and celebration.
🌸 Red Clover
Supports hormonal balance and carries gentle fertility symbolism.
🌿 Mugwort
Emerging stronger now — linked to dreams, protection and liminal work.
Beltane herbals tend to focus on:
Circulation
Hormonal harmony
Heart opening
Aphrodisiac qualities
Protection blends
Energetically, this is a time for oils, smoke blends, and floral waters that awaken rather than soothe.
Crystals for Beltane Energy
Crystals that amplify vitality and desire work beautifully now.
🔥 Carnelian
Confidence, creativity, sacral energy.
🌹 Rose Quartz
Love — romantic and self-directed.
🌿 Emerald
Traditionally linked to fertility and abundance.
🔥 Garnet
Grounded passion and life force.
Wear them. Place them on your altar. Keep them near your workspace if you’re birthing new ideas.
Simple Ways to Celebrate Beltane
Beltane doesn’t need to be dramatic — but it does need to feel alive.
Light a candle at sunset on 30th April.
Decorate your space with fresh flowers.
Create a small floral or greenery crown.
Make a protection charm for your home.
Bless your thresholds and doorways.
Spend time outside at dusk.
If you work with oils, this is a beautiful time for blends containing neroli, rose, jasmine, orange blossom, cinnamon leaf or patchouli — sensual but not overwhelming.
Beltane & The Body
Longer days increase vitamin D production, influence circadian rhythms and often boost libido and energy. From a nervous system perspective, this is an outward-facing season.
Support yourself with:
Gentle strengthening exercise
Time in sunlight
Seasonal foods like asparagus, radishes and fresh greens
Hydration and mineral support
Let your rituals match your physiology.
Protection at Beltane
Though joyful, Beltane was historically also a protective festival. Fire was used to safeguard livestock, crops and households.
You might:
Cleanse your home with a citrus-based spray
Refresh protective charms
Wash floors with herbal infusions
Place hawthorn (never take from a lone tree) near your doorway
Protection and pleasure are not opposites. Beltane holds both.
