There’s something quietly powerful about spiritual waters.
They don’t burn like incense. They don’t linger like oil. They evaporate. They clear. They shift the air and disappear — leaving something subtle behind.
When we talk about the history and uses of spiritual waters, we’re stepping into a lineage that spans centuries, continents and cultures. These aren’t new-age inventions. They are devotional tools, cleansing agents, protective allies and ritual staples across folk traditions.
Let’s start with the most recognisable.
Florida Water – Murray & Lanman
Florida Water was introduced in 1808 by the New York perfumery company Murray & Lanman. Despite the name, it wasn’t created in the state of Florida. The name refers to the Spanish word florida, meaning “flowery”, and is often associated with the romantic myth of the Fountain of Youth.
Originally marketed as a refreshing cologne and tonic, Florida Water quickly found its way into spiritual and folk practices. It became widely used in Hoodoo, Espiritismo, Santería and various forms of folk Catholicism.
Why?
Because of its formula — citrus, floral notes, spice — uplifting, cleansing, bright. It cuts through stagnant energy. It refreshes a space. It’s often used to:
Cleanse altars and ritual tools
Wash hands before prayer or spellwork
Add to floor washes for spiritual clearing
Anoint the body for protection or blessing
Offer to ancestors
It’s both practical and symbolic — cleansing the physical surface while signalling energetic renewal.
Understanding the history and uses of spiritual waters helps us appreciate that they sit at the crossroads of perfume, medicine and magic.
Kananga Water
Kananga Water is floral, soft, often centred around ylang-ylang. It carries a more devotional tone. Where Florida Water feels sharp and bright, Kananga feels like an offering.
Traditionally used to attract benevolent spirits, bless spaces and sweeten energy, it’s often associated with altar work, prayer and gentle spiritual elevation.
It feels like hospitality — but for the unseen.
Carnation Water
Less commonly discussed but equally beautiful, Carnation Water carries heart-centred symbolism. Carnations have long associations with devotion, love and remembrance.
This type of spiritual water is often used in blessing rituals, particularly around love, reconciliation and emotional healing. It’s softer in character — less about banishing, more about opening.
Bay Rum
Bay Rum originated in the Caribbean as a grooming tonic and aftershave, made from bay leaves soaked in rum and spices. Over time, it took on spiritual significance.
It’s warming, bold, protective. Often associated with vitality, masculine energy, ancestral strength and grounding. It’s the kind of scent that commands presence.
In spiritual practice, it may be used for:
Protection work
Confidence rituals
Ancestral offerings
Strengthening personal authority
Again, the history and uses of spiritual waters show us how everyday grooming products and perfumed waters became woven into spiritual systems — because scent has always bridged the physical and the unseen.

Why Do Spiritual Waters Work?
On a practical level, scent impacts the limbic system within seconds — the part of the brain connected to memory, emotion and behaviour. A sharp citrus blend can lift mood. A floral note can soften the body.
On a symbolic level, water itself is ancient medicine. It cleanses. It carries intention. It evaporates, symbolising release.
Personally, I think spiritual waters are underrated. They’re less intense than smoke cleansing, less heavy than oils. They’re subtle, adaptable and incredibly versatile — perfect for modern homes and daily rituals.
And while Shadow & Sage doesn’t currently stock spiritual waters, they are quietly in formulation. Thoughtfully crafted. Respectfully rooted. Arriving in 2026.
Because when we create, we create with lineage in mind.
The beauty of exploring the history and uses of spiritual waters is remembering that ritual doesn’t need to be complicated. Sometimes it’s as simple as washing your hands with intention before beginning your day.
Clear. Bless. Move forward.
